Precision Shafts Made to Your Print
Tracey Gear & Precision Shaft manufactures precision turned and ground shafts to customer blueprints, with keyways, splines, gear teeth, threads, and other features machined on a single part. We hold ground diameters to 0.0003″ total tolerance with surface finishes down to 8 µin Ra. Every shaft is made in our Pawtucket, Rhode Island facility under an ISO 9001:2015 certified quality system, in small to medium production runs, 100% in the USA.
We are a build-to-print shop. You supply a complete engineering drawing, and we develop the manufacturing method to hold the dimensions, tolerances, and finishes it calls out.
Shaft Features We Machine
- Ground bearing journals and critical diameters
- Keyways and flats
- Tapers
- Splines and serrations
- Integral spur, helical, and bevel gear teeth
- Worms and integral worm wheel teeth
- UNC and other threads, cut or CNC thread ground
- Cross holes
- Bolt circles on shaft ends
- Hollow and gun-drilled bores
- Center holes
How We Make Them
- We turn and mill shafts by CNC turning & milling
- We grind bearing journals and critical diameters by CNC grinding
- We cut splines and gear teeth on our CNC gear cutting equipment
- We produce precision threads by CNC thread grinding
Finished Shafts, One Purchase Order
We manage heat treating, plating, passivation, and balancing through our network of qualified vendors, so you receive a finished shaft from a single supplier.
Capabilities
- Grinding length: up to 72″ between centers
- Grinding diameter: up to 10″
- Maximum length and maximum diameter cannot be combined on one part. The limit depends on part weight, and we will confirm capacity from your print.
- Splined sections: up to 60″ between centers (see splines & spline shafts)
- Ground diameter tolerance: 0.0003″ total
- Ground surface finish: down to 8 µin Ra
- Lot sizes: small to medium production runs
Materials
Our shaft work is primarily in steel and stainless steel, and we quote other materials as specified on your print. Your drawing must call out the material. We do not recommend or select materials.
Industries We Serve
- Military & defense suppliers
- Pump & valve manufacturers
- Canning & food processing equipment manufacturers
- Machinery builders
Common Questions About Our Precision Shafts
What size shafts can you grind?
We grind shafts up to 72″ between centers and up to 10″ in diameter. Because of part weight, we cannot grind a shaft at both maximums. Send your print and we will confirm capacity.
What tolerance can you hold on ground diameters?
We commit to 0.0003″ total tolerance on ground diameters.
What surface finish can you achieve on ground diameters?
We grind diameters to surface finishes down to 8 µin Ra.
Can you cut gear teeth, splines, and threads on the same shaft?
Yes. We machine integral spur, helical, bevel, and worm gear teeth, splines, UNC threads, keyways, cross holes, and bolt circles on a single shaft, so you do not need to split the work between suppliers.
Can you deliver a shaft that is heat treated and plated?
Yes. We manage heat treating, plating, passivation, and balancing through our network of qualified vendors and deliver a finished shaft on one purchase order.
Can you make a shaft from a sample part?
No. We do not reverse engineer parts or work from samples. We require a complete engineering drawing.
What We Need to Quote
Please send a complete engineering blueprint that includes:
- All dimensions and tolerances, including runout and concentricity callouts
- Spline, gear, or thread data for any toothed or threaded features
- Material
- Heat treatment and hardness requirements
- Surface finish requirements
- Plating, coating, passivation, or balancing specifications
- Quantity
