What is CNC Thread Grinding?
CNC Thread grinding is a process where an abrasive wheel is formed with CNC equipment to the exact shape of the thread. It cuts a specific pattern on the workpiece, which rotates slowly while it moves axially. The wheel is monitored and re-modified (dressed) throughout the process to ensure the highest accuracy of the thread. Additionally, the wheel is able to grind parts that have been heat treated, removing any distortion that could occur from the heat treating process. So it’s mainly employed for accurate and precision tool and gage work, which produces different threaded parts.
Different reasons why thread grinding is used:
- It obtains an accurate and quality finish.
- It can work on diverse material hardness.
- It has the best value when it comes to different classes of screw threads using thread-grinding oils, machines, etc.
In most cases, threads are ground or formed from the grinding process. But there are also instances where pre-cut threads are finished through the highly adaptable thread grinding process.
Threads Achieved Through the Thread Grinding Process
At Tracey Gear & Precision Shaft, we use the thread grinding method for different types of threads. Some examples are ACME threads, ISO Series 60°, ISO Trapezoidal threads, ISO Buttress threads and Unified Series 60°.
- ACME and ISO Trapeziodal threads: ACME (American) ISO Trapeziodal (Metric) are trapeziodal screw threads. They offer high strength and are typically found where large loads are required. The threads can be right or left hand, and be single or multiple starts.
- Unified and ISO Series 60° threads: Unified (American) and ISO (metric) Series are a family of coarse and fine, right and left hand 60° threads. Unified has the following designations: UN, UNR, and UNJ. ISO has: M and MJ. The threads are the main standard for bolts, nuts, and a many other threaded fasteners.
- Buttress and ISO Buttress threads: Buttress (American) and ISO Buttress (Metric) threads are also called sawtooth thread forms, available in asymmetric shapes. One face is square, while the other is slanted. These are designed to handle axial thrust, which is applied in only one direction.
The Accuracy Achieved by Thread Grinding
Thread grinding can achieve high accuracy due to it being a form-grinding process. We use various CNC operations to obtain the form shape of the desired threads, making reaching a master-grade thread gauge possible. Single-edge or single-ribbed wheels are used to make this possible and attainable. The wheel form is created and maintained by the CNC thread grinder throughout the process.
The Multiple Benefits of Thread Grinding
Thread grinding provides many benefits, which is why many industries utilize it compared to other methods.
The advantages of thread grinding are as follows:
- Smoother surface with improved accuracy: The outcomes created by thread grinding mean a better and smoother texture. At the same time, accuracy is also improved since it can create far more consistent threads than other methods.
- Better cut control: Thread grinding also offers better control for the screw cuts, which means there’s little to no room for error.
- It’s applicable for tough and rigid materials: Thread grinding is ideal for tough materials.
