Tracey Gear & Precision Shaft manufactures planetary gears to customer blueprints, including sun gears, planet gears, and internal ring gears, in inch and metric sizes. For spur planetary systems, we can supply the sun, planets, and ring gear from one shop. Every gear is made in our Pawtucket, Rhode Island facility under an ISO 9001:2015 certified quality system, in small to medium production runs, 100% in the USA.
We are a build-to-print shop. You supply a complete engineering drawing for each gear, and we develop the manufacturing method to hold the gear data, tolerances, and finishes it calls out.
Planetary Gears We Manufacture
- Sun gears, spur and helical. Sun gears are external spur or helical gears, cut to the planetary geometry on your print.

How We Make Them
- We cut sun and planet gears on our CNC gear cutting equipment
- We shape internal spur ring gears
- We produce gear blanks, bores, and hubs by CNC turning & milling
- We finish bores and critical diameters by CNC grinding

Materials
We manufacture planetary gears in steel, stainless steel, bronze, nylon, and cast iron, as specified on your print. Your drawing must call out the material. We do not recommend or select materials.

Common Questions About Our Planetary Gear Work
Can you supply a complete planetary gear set?
Yes, for spur planetary systems. We manufacture the sun gear, planet gears, and internal ring gear to your drawings. For helical planetary systems, we manufacture the sun and planet gears only.
Can you make helical ring gears?
No. We shape internal spur ring gears only.
What size planetary gears can you make?
We manufacture sun and planet gears up to 36″ in diameter with up to 12″ face width, from 3 to 48 diametral pitch. We manufacture internal spur ring gears up to 16″ pitch diameter with up to 4″ face width, from 6 to 24 diametral pitch.
Do you make metric planetary gears?
Yes. We manufacture metric sun and planet gears from 0.5 to 8 module, and metric ring gears from 1 to 4 module.
What gear quality can you hold?
We manufacture sun and planet gears up to AGMA Q11.
Do you make planet carriers?
No. We manufacture the gears only.
Can you make a planetary gear from a sample part?
No. We do not reverse engineer parts or work from samples. We require a complete engineering drawing for each gear.
What We Need to Quote
Please send a complete engineering blueprint for each gear that includes:
- Full gear data: number of teeth, diametral pitch or module, pressure angle, pitch diameter, face width, tooth thickness or measurement over pins, and quality class
- For helical gears: helix angle and hand
- Material and any heat treatment
- Dimensions and tolerances
- Surface finish requirements
- Any additional processes (plating, coating, etc.)
- Quantity of each gear
