Precision Gears & Shafts

Precision Gear Cutting at Tracey Gear & Precision Shaft

In equipment using speed control mechanisms, gears are important for transmitting rotary power from one machinery component to another. However, not all gears are the same, with each type offering its own individual design features. It’s essential to select the right gear for your equipment — as well as a reputable gear manufacturer known for quality — to ensure that it operates correctly and efficiently.

At Tracey Gear & Precision Shaft, we specialize in CNC gear-cutting services, manufacturing standard and custom gears for our clients per their specific requirements. We bring 80 years of expertise to each project, providing seamless production and product solutions. Our skilled craftspeople take pride in their work, assuring that satisfied customers return again and again.

We assist OEMs and distributors in industries ranging from electronics and chemicals to food processing and pharmaceuticals. Machining parts that comply with various industry or Mil-Spec standards based on your needs, Tracey Gear has the background and resources to handle small orders of 25 parts up to high-volume production.

If you’re looking for a gear manufacturer to support your new product line, experiencing quality or delivery issues with your current supplier, or simply exploring your options for suppliers with turnkey service and optimal pricing, our team is here to help. Read on to learn more about the gear types we offer, their common applications, and how Tracey Gear can support you with comprehensive precision gear-cutting services.

Types of Gears We Produce

We make a broad range of gears to serve our diverse client base. All of the gears we produce are custom made per print, and our team can work with you or your engineering department to improve manufacturability and cost. Below are some of the common gear types we offer.

Worm/Worm Gear Sets

One of the oldest gear styles, worms and worm shafts are parts with a spiral thread. This thread engages and drives the toothed worm gear/worm wheel. Based on your specifications, we can create competitively priced worm gears and shafts in your preferred size, volume, and design. Our worm gears have a maximum OD of 36″, and you can select from materials such as:

  • Aluminum
  • Bronze
  • Cast Iron
  • Stainless Steel
  • Steel

Bevel Gears

These gears transmit power at 90° and have conically shaped tooth-bearing faces. We offer straight bevel gears with diameters of up to 24″. Our team manufactures them in-house with a focus on quality, durability, and dependability to ensure optimal performance. Material options for our bevel gears include:

  • Aluminum
  • Bronze
  • Fiber
  • Nylon
  • Stainless Steel
  • Steel

We also manufacture miter gears, which are a type or class of bevel gear in which the set has a 1:1 gear ratio.

Helical Gears

These cylindrical gears have slanted tooth faces and can handle significant load capacities. As they experience less friction, they’re ideal for high-speed applications or those requiring minimal noise generation. Helical gears serve applications in which the shafts are parallel, which is the most common configuration, and crossed applications in which the shafts are at right angles to each other.

Our helical gears are available with diameters up to 36″ and Diametrical Pitches up to 3. We’re also capable of cutting helical gears on shafts as long as 56″. Material options to select from include:

  • Aluminum
  • Bronze
  • Fiber
  • Nylon
  • Stainless Steel
  • Steel

Spur Gears

With a straight tooth face, these cylindrical toothed gears serve to transfer mechanical power in between shafts in gear pumps and motors, transmissions, conveyor systems, and more. Spur gears have typical applications as changing gears when machinery needs its speed ratios modified (depending on the job your equipment is running). Our company manufactures multiple varieties of spur gears, including:

  • Internal Spur Gears
  • External Spur Gears
  • Rack-and-Pinion Spur Gears
  • Planetary Spur Gear Drives

Factoring in a gear’s intended application and its environmental conditions, you can choose from high-quality material options like those we use in our bevel and helical gears.

Involute & Straight-Sided Splines

These mechanical components are effective for joining two rotating parts together, creating a strong, dependable connection with accurate alignment. Involute and straight-sided splines also enable angular motion and error-free, high-torque transference. At Tracey Gear, we manufacture both internal and external splines. They look similar to spur gears, but their operation is different. The external spline inserts easily into the internal spline, engaging all teeth at all times.

For motors and other equipment prioritizing precision, our company offers:

  • Internal Involute Splines, which are perfect for light-load, high-speed applications for an even load distribution
  • Straight-Sided or Parallel Key Splines, which are the better option for heavier loads and slower speeds

Additional Gear Types

In addition to the types of gears already mentioned, we also work on such gear types as:

Common Gear Applications

The typical purpose of gears is to transmit power. Gears can change speed, force, or direction of the power being transmitted. Virtually every industry uses gears; however, it’s imperative to select the gear type that’s compatible with your equipment. This will better ensure smooth, seamless operations.

Our team currently makes gears for such industries as:

  • Amusement Parks
  • Communications
  • Elevators
  • Food and Beverage Processing
  • Machinery Manufacturing
  • Military
  • Packaging
  • Pump and Valve Manufacturing
  • Turbines

If you don’t see your industry listed here, or if you’re having difficulty choosing the right gear for your application, Tracey Gear can help.
